Support Our Cropped And Docked Breeds - March In Memory Of Captain A.J. Haggerty At The Steuben Day Parade In New York City September 16th 2006

I am writing on behalf of Babette Haggerty and "Cropped and Docked breeds".

In light of the current pending anti-cropping and docking legislation in New York City (Bill A11242) and the urgent "call to action" by the American Kennel Club to the fancy in the July 2006 issue of the A.K.C. Gazette, I ask you to read consider the following...

This year on July 3rd we lost one of our strongest and most vocal supporters of cropping and docking, Captain A.J. Haggerty. Captain Haggerty wrote many articles on these procedures for the most respected dog periodicals. He spoke at seminars and conferences around the world concerning these procedures. He categorized them as "good animal husbandry" and he coined the phrase "I do it for the health of it".

Through his decades in dogs and with shear determination Captain Haggerty was incredibly successful in creating change. Before his death Captain dreamed of using the Steuben Day Parade, better known as the German American parade as a stage for German purebreds. Many of these breeds are cropped and/or docked. 'Cap' felt this was one way to showcase these breeds and breeders in a positive light. He imagined teams of dogs and handlers proudly marching through New York City. Giving the public a chance to me these breeds and their caring breeders and owners He believed with well thought out publicity this was one way to showcase these happy, healthy breeds to the world.

The Steuban Day Parade is held the (Saturday, September 16th) in New York City. As well as contacting assembly members in NY and asking them to OPPOSE BILL A11242 take a stand and march in honor of Captain A.J. Haggerty, and cropped and/or docked breeds at the Steuban Day Parade. Remember a picture is worth a thousand words!

To contact Assembly Member Sandy Galef and oppose bill A11242 call; 518-455-5348 or send a certified letter to her at; LOB 641, Albany NY 12248.

To represent your breed in the Steuban Parade or for more information please contact: NDW Chairperson Babette Haggerty at 561-747-8181 or email at: schoolfordogs@bellsouth.net

FORWARD TO BREEDERS AND OWNERS OF GERMAN CROPPED/ DOCKED BREEDS

A dedication to dogs and a flair for business established Judy, the founder of National Dog Week, as an icon in the sport.

Between these major and small wars the dog has helped the blind, the deaf, the lame and the infirmed in so many ways. Sled dogs rushed the serum to Nome and dogs have always been there on the farms and other remote places helping people. Centuries ago the dog helped people put food on the table by assisting the hunter. Today's dogs, much removed and improved from those earlier dogs are still at helping the sportsman and hunter. Even the simple task of companionship to a small child has made the world a better place. They have always been at our sides to comfort and help us. Let us return all those favors bestowed on us by the dog. During the last full week in September celebrate National Dog Week as it has been for the last 75 years The American Dog Owners Association is the organization sponsoring National Dog Week.

Everyone should do something for National Dog Week. It isn't necessary to sign up here. You can do it individually on your own or along with a local group. This local work is truly important because this is a national project and the dogs should be honored in every city, village and town. A real fun and easy thing to do is set up local demonstrations. Where will you obtain a venue? Easy, contact the larger malls. They have a department assigned the task of attracting people to the mall. They are set up and geared to handle demonstrations and will produce publicity for you. Even if they work on the publicity you should also work o the publicity. Their job is to get publicity for the mall and your job is to get publicity for our best buddies, the dogs.

There are hundreds of ideas out there. Should you want to plug into these ideas sign up for our e-mail list by contacting Babette Haggerty at schoolfordogs@bellsouth.net. Another thing you can do is volunteer for any of the jobs we have open, including moderating the just mentioned e-mail list.

Pet Professionals in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania are working together to make everyone aware of National Dog Week 2005. What started out as one phone call to create a doggie top ten list for the local morning radio show turned out to be much more. Nearly every pet professional in Punxsutawney responded enthusiastically. The one requested doggie top ten list turned into five individual lists each representing a different field of the canine profession and each will be delivered on-air during the morning show that week.

Punxsutawney's own on-air morning show personality, CJ O’Brien, will be introducing one top ten list for everyday of National Dog Week. The guests delivering the top ten will range from Veterinary Staff to pseudo named characters such as “Greta the Great Groomer.” The special guest delivering the Friday morning top ten list will be none other than “ trainer to the stars” and author Captain A.J. Haggerty.

Kicking off the National Dog Week festivities is the Punxsutawney Spirit Newspaper with a half-page article on National Dog Week complete with photos. Punxsutawney's own radio station WPXZ 104.1 FM is airing a 30-minute community spotlight on Dog's, their care and National Dog Week. The week’s events will conclude with Punxsutawney Appreciation Days Pet Show dedicated to community pets.

We encourage everyone, "for the love of dogs” to pick up the phone and make that first phone call and bring your community together for NATIONAL DOG WEEK!

The most unselfish living thing in the world is your dog. If you are in danger, your dog needs only to hear your cry of distress to rush to your aid, without thought of his own life, fearless of guns and enemies.

The most patient thing in the world is your dog, waiting for hours at the top of the stairs to hear the sound of your footsteps, never complaining however late you may be.

The most grateful thing in the world is your dog. Whatever you give him, whatever you do for him, he never is guilty of ingratitude. To him you are the most powerful personage in the world and beyond censure; you are your dog's god; you can do no wrong.

The most friendly thing in the world is your dog. Of all the animal kingdom, he alone serves man without whip, without compulsion, glad to be by the side of his master wherever he may be, whatever he may do, and sad in heart when his master is away.

The most forgiving thing in the world is your dog. The one virtue most humans lack is forgiveness. But your dog carries no grudge and no spite. Punish him even undeservedly, and he comes to you, nudges his moist nose into your hand, looks up at you with pleading eyes, and wags his tail hesitatingly as tho to say, "Oh, come on, let's be pals again."
The most loyal thing in the world is your dog. Whether you come home from Congress or from jail, whether you have lost your fortune or made a million, whether you return dressed in fashion's height or in rags, whether you have been hailed a hero or condemned as criminal, your dog is waiting for you with a welcoming bark of delight, a wagging tail and a heart that knows no guile.

The world likes dogs because dogs are nearest to moral perfection of all living things.
